The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 皮克斯又写了一篇“反好莱坞精神传统”甚至“整个美国精神传统”的心理学小论文，论题并不见得精深却总是捡起被成人遗落在精神角落的本质放在手心，一瞬的回响或者久久的回味。
治愈？温暖？希望？ 其实生活，不止于此。 生的希望，不是一片好吃的披萨，不是落在手心的树叶，不是地铁站里动听的音乐，更不是任何一种“美好”的经历——指望它们代表生活，就像给自杀的人留言“奶茶很好喝”一样可笑。并非否认这种美好，只是这种美好太易碎。 人们谈论的大多可视的、细微的、看起来易得的美好，都需要背后有某种支撑:一个奔波于生存的、真正意义上的普通人，是没有心力，或者没有机会去感知这些的。 它不是“送给普通人的治愈之作”，它依然是迪士尼以高高在上——至少是中产的视角，去讲述（毋宁说“想象”）的“普通人”的故事。
四两拨千斤的影片，还没反应过来故事就结束了，皮克斯还是拿回了属于自己的剧本。
散场的时候我问保洁有彩蛋吗，保洁大哥说，有彩蛋，有一个城堡。等呀等呀，最后等来了皮克斯的logo，还真是个城堡。
当树叶落入男主手心，我和主人公一起顿悟：原来生活本身就是幸福。当我们渴望大海，却忘记了我们一直身处海中央。无需台词，甚至无需配乐，几个闪回镜头足以扣人心弦。《寻梦环游记》用音乐找回亲情，而《心灵奇旅》用音乐拥抱生活，拥抱真实的人生。
一部真正能触及灵魂的电影。一片落叶原来都这么美，普通的蓝天白云可以这么好看，习以为常的披萨原来这么美味，下水道的热气也可以这么有趣…不要让任何事情浇灭对生活的热爱和热情。
当我们习惯于沉浸在资本市场里而不自知的时候，皮克斯提醒我们活着不要太功利——突然想起前段时间的看到的那句话：每个小男孩童年的梦想，绝对不是买一套房子。可是，现实会答应么。
主题大胆，视觉大胆，讲故事的方式也大胆。灵魂拷问不稀奇，稀奇的是全面创新。
生命的火花并来自于梦想、爱好、自我实现这些必须要追寻的东西，而只是对于生活单纯地热爱。

一部极有可能拿到奥斯卡最佳动画长片/最佳原创配乐的电影；
PS:天天说中国的动画或电影与西方的人落后程度，这个片子才是东方几千年都拍不出来的电影。从理念世界到精神分析到存在主义，西方哲学碰撞几百年，其实精神已经深刻的融入艺术作品中，甚至是像这种非常通俗流行的作品，但同时也是充满思辨的。

先不说把灵魂窄化成“知道自己人生的意义”有多低龄，就说灵魂这种又虚又大的概念，是靠何等的鬼扯才能搭建出一套完整又基本合乎逻辑的小宇宙。。。这和《头脑特工队》不一样，性格形成论这种东西，很容易理解并产生共情，可是说到灵魂，说白了，纯靠编了。

带着很高的期望去，反而觉得……嗯，一般。怎么说，主角一开始是loser相，过程光怪陆离，然后用复杂的逻辑讲了道理，后来主角学会了在宇宙中心做自己，最后上了高级动人的价值。就很，奇葩说？
当你有了想活下去的感觉的时候，你就有了你的火花。
