The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 这是一个落魄导演不得志的故事，也是一个美丽女性守护自己的爱情牺牲一切的故事
剧本很好，换些大牌演员，剧情加点起伏和惊悚，就是TOP250
落款是茨威格，声称没有精神追求的人生是一具空壳，有的人徒具空壳、不以为意，有的人则无枝可依、生不如死。叫《象棋的故事》，其实还是文学故事，像纳博科夫的《防守》，走棋是技艺、走棋厉害叫技艺精湛，如同匈牙利籍世界冠军，棋艺近似人性却并非人性。人性范畴内该问的问题是为什么：为什么要下棋，机缘是什么？以下棋为职业是委曲求全吗？可不可以不下棋？如果可以选择不下棋，你还会下棋吗？有鉴于此，故事真正的内核并不是象棋，而是《奥德赛》式的精神流亡。如果被关禁闭，剥夺一个人的思考能力，剥夺幻想、希望和好奇心，是不是可以找到某种活下去的方式。电影逼问精神世界存在的必要性：也许处于和平年代，拥有很多选项时会不以为意，比如维也纳沦陷之前，约瑟夫根本不相信会大难临头；不相信有一天惨遭放逐，一本棋谱竟会是救命的浮木。
女人给了男人幸福，男人却用自甘堕落回报女人。ps淑子也太可爱了吧！
只是当年想象的弘大，放在今日却显得渺小了。

昆仑德语字幕组译制。7.0。不算成功的一次改编，茨威格小说的精神世界并不容易改编，不如说是借用了象棋的故事。双线交叉闪回叙事并没有为平庸的剧本增色多少，没有更强的戏剧性反而观感困乏。奥利弗马苏奇比较熟悉的演员了，演技在线把一个精神肉体被囚禁的状态成功表现出来，似精神分裂一样。
拍的太好 在资料馆看的时候周围应该大多都是爱电影的，共鸣更多，我们都吸溜着鼻涕又笑又哭

错过了几乎一整个北影节，最后赶上这最后一场。迷影故事，其实怎么拍都不会难看。但剧本有点问题，叙事也拖沓。
